Linet comes from a flourishing career with over 15 years of experience in banking and project management. Originally from Kenya, Linet obtained both a Bachelor’s in Economics (2005) and a Master’s in Project Planning and Management (2016) from the University of Nairobi, Kenya. She began her career in banking and worked in various roles across Absa Bank Kenya, one of Kenya’s major banks.

When Linet came to the US in 2023, she focused her job search on roles in banking and project management. Despite her strong experiences in both fields, she struggled to obtain interviews, “Getting into a professional career was proving to be hard”, she says. Determined not to let her career stagnate, Linet balanced long shifts at Walmart with online project management courses, hoping to re-enter her field. During this time, she learned about ABN and saw it as a pathway to get back on track.

Linet’s journey with ABN did not start with this Fellowship. She first applied to the Program Management Fellowship with World Education Services in 2023. Although she was not accepted for that program, she did not give up. She then went through career advising, where her advisor helped her improve her resume and prepare for interviews. By the time the applications opened for the 2024 Fellowship cohort, she felt ready to apply, “I am so glad that I did because look at where we are now”, she says.

Linet was placed with Harvard Medical School in the Office of Research Administration (ORA). She says, “The fellowship has been great. Everyone is willing to help show you the right direction, welcome you, and they are friendly people. It gives you the feeling that you can progress in your career”.

She has had the chance to work on many projects that have helped her to grow, including developing an internal newsletter and creating an onboarding program for future ABN fellows. Her supervisor, Christina Kennedy, had great things to say about Linet’s work, “She easily acclimated to a complex environment and contributed significantly by creating a digital internal newsletter that enhanced remote communication”.

“I was very lucky to be attached to HMS and my supervisor, Christina Kennedy, who has been very supportive”, Linet states.

“Linet’s project management expertise shone through as she efficiently initiated and tracked projects, ensuring our team remained focused and engaged. Linet excelled in communication and interpersonal skills, and she proactively completed a self-paced Onboarding Curriculum for Research Administrators”, said Christina, “With her positive attitude and supportive nature, she will be an asset to any organization”.

Linet’s journey proves that persistence and the right opportunities can lead to career success, even in a new country. She encourages other skilled immigrants to embrace every opportunity, keep learning, and never give up, “’Even if you do not succeed the first time, keep trying. ABN has the best programs to help you nurture your career and grow”.
