About the African Bridge Network

The African Bridge Network (ABN) builds a supportive community which values and strengthens the qualifications and experiences of skilled immigrants, helping them reach their full career potential.

Vision Statement

We envision a day when the skills of immigrant professionals are highly valued, and they can use their past experiences to build their careers, support their families, and make meaningful contributions to our society.

Primary Board Member Duties

All Board members should hold themselves accountable for the following responsibilities:

  • Contribute meaningfully to the Board’s core work of organizational oversight and fiduciary duties, organizational planning, mobilizing adequate resources, and providing ongoing guidance and support to the Executive Director.
  • Attend and actively participate in at least 75% of Board meetings and activities.
  • Serve as an active ABN advocate and ambassador, engaging in outreach, including to new board members, when necessary. 
  • Participate in our Culture of Philanthropy by making a personally meaningful annual contribution and actively participating in ABN fundraising efforts. 
  • Serve on one or more committees or ad-hoc task forces, as needed.
  • Participate in regular self-assessment of Board effectiveness.
  • Actively maintain the integrity of ABN’s governance by strictly adhering to conflict-of-interest policies and engaging in regular, transparent reviews of organizational compliance and risk management practices.   
  • Actively provide strategic guidance on organizational sustainability and financial health, leveraging personal expertise to support the Executive Director.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Ability to consistently dedicate 5–10 hours per month to ABN board activities, including attendance at bi-monthly board meetings, active participation in at least one committee, and engagement in strategic ABN events as outlined in the ABN Board Member Commitment Policy.
  • 10+ years of professional experience with a track record of senior leadership or equivalent executive-level strategic impact.
  • Desire to make a positive impact in the lives of immigrants
  • Commitment to ABN’s mission of empowering skilled immigrants, with a clear understanding of the challenges facing immigrant professionals in the Massachusetts workforce.
  • Show willingness to share ideas, listen, compromise, and advance the work of ABN.
  • Previous board experience is preferred but not required; ABN provides robust onboarding.

Board Tenure

ABN Board terms are 3 years and renewable for 3 terms.
