Khady Mascarenhas, originally from Cape Verde, is a dynamic and career-driven individual who moved to Portugal at the age of 17 to pursue a degree in Business Management at the University of Porto.
After completing her degree, she moved to the United States in 2015. Once arriving in the US, she earned a certificate in Banking and Finance, which led her to her first banking job. While working in banking, she had her degree from Portugal evaluated by the Center for Educational Documentation (CED), which allowed her to obtain her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Lesley University after completing one more year of study.
Khady worked for seven years in banking. She also worked for the City of Brockton managing a program to support diverse small businesses before discovering the Fellowship. She states that one of her biggest challenges in building her career was creating a strong, professional network, “Sometimes it’s hard for you to try something different or have a different opportunity if you are not connected to the right people.”
Through the Fellowship, Khady was placed at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Research Administration Process Improvement & Training. She has also received two extensions as she applied for full-time positions. Khady thanks ABN and the employers, “This is a really good opportunity to get connected to the right employers. They know where they are placing us. It’s not something that happens randomly. They give us the opportunity to really be in a place where we can learn and grow.”
We envision a day when the skills of immigrant professionals are highly valued and they can use their past experiences to build their careers, support their families, and make meaningful contributions to our society.
