Menvy was building a well-respected and successful medical career for herself in Haiti before she decided to move to the US. Menvy had received her Doctorate in Medicine from Université de la Fondation Dr. Aristide and was two years into her Pediatrics Residency when she left Haiti, but she was determined not to let the relocation affect her professional development.

When Menvy moved to Massachusetts, she started working as a Patient Care Associate at Massachusetts General Hospital. Although this role was not as advanced as her previous positions, she was ready to work her way up. As she worked toward becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant, she longed for a way to reconnect with her medical background. That’s when she discovered ABN, a turning point in her career.

Menvy became a part of ABN through the career advising service, where her advisor encouraged her to take a chance and apply for the Fellowship. That chance paid off, as she was placed at Massachusetts General Hospital in the Yvonne L. Munn Center for Nursing Research department. She appreciates the opportunity that the Fellowship has given her to grow, “The Fellowship helps us to integrate and understand the job market in the US. It helps us understand the importance of networking. Knowing this is very important for professionals”. The Immigrant Professional Fellowship is designed to move skilled immigrants from low-skilled jobs into occupations that utilize their qualifications and professional experiences. Menvy’s story captures the effectiveness of the program.

With this experience, she has gained the proper skills and training to work in the research field. Although many challenges stood in her way, Menvy has worked hard to be where she is now. As an aspiring US physician, the biggest challenge is the United States Medical Licensing Exam. Thankfully, the recently passed Physician Pathway Act (PPA) gives her hope to becoming a working physician again, “This is one of the best opportunities that foreign-trained physicians have now, now they have the opportunity to work without as many barriers”. The PPA is a breakthrough for foreign-trained doctors like Menvy, offering a streamlined route to resume their medical careers in the US. With reduced barriers to licensing, she now sees a clear path to practicing medicine again. She hopes to see other opportunities like this that will help skilled immigrants succeed. “Thank you to ABN and MIRA for the PPA”, Menvy says.

When asked what advice she would give to other skilled immigrants interested in the Fellowship, Menvy says, “This is an opportunity not to be missed, you have nothing to lose, only to gain”.
