Before moving, Nouran Amir received a good education and had a pharmaceutical job in Egypt. With her pharmaceutical experience and dreams of expanding her career, she packed up and moved to the U.S. in 2019. Nouran hopes that this change will give her and her daughters more opportunities, “I want them to enjoy the freedom and have options in their careers, and live a happy life”.
Although Nouran has a master’s degree, she still had to work hard to overcome many barriers that stood in the way of getting a good job. She needed to pass equivalency exams in order to get a U.S. pharmaceutical license. She also says some of the barriers she faced were “Overcoming the employer bias, coming from a different background, and having an accent”. But Nouran overcame these problems and now has pharmacy qualifications in both Egypt and the U.S., holding a master’s degree and a license in pharmaceutical care.
But Nouran continued to dream big, took a chance, and joined the ABN’s Immigrant Professionals Fellowship. She wanted to implement her other skills and try working outside of the pharmaceutical industry, and she succeeded. Now working in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Nouran has already made a difference. She has been included in successful budgeting projects and has built strong connections with the doctors on these projects. She has also learned important insight into the role of a Research Administrator, a skill that is sure to be beneficial in the future. Due to her impressive skills, Nouran has been offered a full-time position as Research Administrator at MGH.
Nouran loved the process involved in the Fellowship and encourages others to take the chance she did and join, “Go for it. Don’t be afraid. You are going to get all the support you need from ABN. It really helps change the lives of many families”.
We envision a day when the skills of immigrant professionals are highly valued and they can use their past experiences to build their careers, support their families, and make meaningful contributions to our society.
