Ludjie Jean Pierre is an experienced physician with a passion for public health. She grew up in Gonaïves, Haiti where she witnessed ongoing natural disasters and political unrest—heartbreaking realities that pushed her to relocate to the US in 2020.
However, Ludjie is channeling her experiences into helping others live a safe and comfortable life. She is currently working to secure her American medical license and a master’s degree in public health. Her hope is that, by combining her clinical skills with her public health knowledge, she can “prevent as many deaths as possible and know what kinds of actions to take” to stop unexpected disasters from happening again.
In addition to Ludjie’s studies and work as a medical scribe, she also served as a 2022 fellow for the Boston Immigrant Professionals Fellowship. Through this fellowship, Ludjie trained with the Department of Neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital to become a Research Administrator.
When asked if there were any highlights from her fellowship experience, Ludjie explains that she is grateful for the connections she built with her colleagues. Unlike her previous positions in Haiti where people rarely converse during working hours, at Massachusetts General Hospital “you can talk about anything: what’s going on in your life, at home, gossip. It really helped me get to know the workplace.” Ludjie sees these connections with colleagues as an important step toward building her professional network.
Ludjie also recognizes that, while the fellowship has had a major impact on her career plans, she will still encounter challenges along the way to her dream job. She explains that language barriers, cultural differences, and a lack of understanding about foreign training might pose challenges on her path to clinical work and medical research. “Here they [American employers] don’t trust your education,” she explains. “If it was in my country it would be different.”
Nevertheless, Ludjie is confident that her fellowship experiences will put her on the right path to achieving her professional goals. She concludes, “With the fellowship, I know that I will enter the healthcare field with a good job.”
Since completing this interview, Ludjie has been hired full-time as a Clinical Research Coordinator at Massachusetts General Hospital. Congratulations, Ludjie!
