Jenny Edouard Pierre-Lys is an internationally-trained physician from Haiti. She moved to Massachusetts three years ago, “In my home country, Haiti, healthcare professionals are being targeted and kidnapped because of a widespread misperception that these professionals are wealthy. For this reason, many of them, including myself, have left the country for a better and safer living environment. Unfortunately and sadly, there are now very few doctors, nurses, and other professionals to care for the people there.”

Jenny is a seasoned healthcare professional, with a Medical Doctor degree from Université Notre Dame D’Haiti, a master’s in Public Health from Université Quisqueya, and 16 years of medical experience. She also has an impressive professional background. Jenny coordinated and managed the HIV/AIDS/MDR-TB Programs at the GHESKIO Centers, a research and clinical facility, for 5 years. She also worked as an HIV/AIDS and Community Health Coordinator for 7 years at Saint Damien, Nos Petits Frères et Soeurs, a well-known Reference Public Health and Clinical Pediatric-Maternal Hospital. Additionally, she participated in many research studies related to these fields and conducted various Quality Improvement Projects that were presented at the yearly International Forum on Quality and Safety in Healthcare, BMJ: British Medical Journal.

Despite Jenny’s extensive medical background, she did not continue this role when she came to Massachusetts. Instead, she worked as an administrative assistant and office manager for two and a half years before starting the Fellowship. From this experience and other observations, she learned about a different cultural environment, “Americans’ ways are mostly all about taking the initiative regarding work, with a strong emphasis on productivity and dedication to climb that career ladder.” She realized that if she wanted to succeed, she needed to adopt an opportunity-seizing attitude and risk-taking behavior.

This Fellowship allowed her to return to a career in healthcare and connect with fellow healthcare professionals. Jenny was placed in the Innovation and Improvement Department at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, “I had the opportunity to work with an amazing team, lead an improvement project for the Maternal-Fetal Medicine clinic, participate in ongoing project activities optimization, collect and analyze quantitative data, facilitate meetings with various stakeholders to help outline change management plans.”

Jenny was offered a job as a Research Specialist-Clinical Liaison at the Harvard Brain Tissue Resource Center in McLean Hospital. She thanks ABN, our funders, and our supporters for providing this possibility, as she stated: “As I always say, how can one acquire the experience requested in a job position, if not given a chance?”
