Mastora holds over 10 years of professional experience and a diverse set of skills. Originally from Afghanistan, she earned three Bachelor’s degrees in Pharmacy and Midwifery from Kabul University, and in Law from the American University of Afghanistan. She has also earned a Master’s degree in Rehabilitation Science from Bangladesh Dhaka University.
Her multidisciplinary background, spanning clinical care, public health, and legal systems, positions her uniquely to contribute to healthcare equity, patient advocacy, and program development in complex environments.
Alongside her extensive educational background, Mastora has worked in a variety of roles. One of her roles was the Director of the Educational/Health Organization for Afghan Women, which supported Afghan women without access to basic human rights and focused on education and training as an advancement tool. In this leadership role, she oversaw program strategy, stakeholder coordination, operational planning, and community-based health initiatives in high-risk settings. She facilitated the distribution of 500 university scholarships for Afghan women and led workshops in family planning, nutrition, and pre/postnatal care for 100 women monthly. Mastora also acts as the current Executive Director of UN Women in Kabul, Afghanistan.
Mastora came to the US in 2022 through a Research Fellowship with Harvard University. Following this opportunity, she also completed Fellowships with Tufts University and Boston Medical Center. Through these fellowships, Mastora gained exposure to US healthcare systems, research methodologies, and interdisciplinary collaboration within leading academic medical institutions. She is always looking for new opportunities and ways to grow.
Mastora has been involved with ABN for about two years now, and has been involved in numerous programs, including our Orientation Workshops, Career Advising, and now, the Immigrant Professionals Fellowship. ABN’s structured programming provided professional readiness support, mentorship, and a pathway to align her global expertise with US employer expectations. She says,
“I feel very comfortable with ABN. When they provide their service, everyone is friendly. I don’t shy away from my language or culture. They have guided us step by step.”
Mastora is a part of the 2025 Immigrant Professionals Fellowship and will be starting her work placement with Boston Medical Center’s Internal Medicine – THRIVE department. In this placement, Mastora will contribute her background in public health programming, women’s health, and healthcare systems coordination to support patient-centered initiatives within the THRIVE department.
Mastora’s journey illustrates how highly skilled immigrant professionals bring global expertise and leadership capacity to US institutions. With continued employer partnerships and philanthropic support, ABN helps ensure that talent like Mastora’s is not underutilized.
We envision a day when the skills of immigrant professionals are highly valued and they can use their past experiences to build their careers, support their families, and make meaningful contributions to our society.
